How Can I Check to See Whether a Movie Is OK for Kids?

Even though a movie might appeal to children, not all material in the film might be appropriate. A parent or guardian is not always able to view each movie beforehand, so he can use a movie's rating to help judge whether the overall subject matter and specific scenes in that movie are suitable for the child's age. The ratings are segmented for different age groups to help parents choose which movies their children should see.

Look at the movie's rating. Compare that rating to the children's ages. In the United States, the Motion Picture Association of America has the ratings of G, which means the movie has minimal violence and no sex or drug use; PG, which signifies parents might consider some material offensive to children, but the movie has no drug use; PG-13, which is a stern cautionary rating, signifying some material might not be suitable for children younger than 13; R, which urges parents to find out more about the movie and not allow children younger than 17 to view it without a parent or guardian present; and NC-17, which is deemed inappropriate for children younger than 17.
