How to Critique Films

A film critique is an analysis of a film. As a film critic, you take the film's cultural messages or implications and its cinematic qualities and provide a reasoned evaluation. Before you can critique a movie, you must watch it first. There are a serious of questions you should ask yourself about the film's content, visual look, use of audio and budget when watching a movie to be critiqued. When you're done, you can write a review for others to read.

Consider the film's content, which includes the writing and acting, editing and how the movie ends. The writing and editing go hand-in-hand. When critiquing, ask yourself these questions: Are the characters interesting and believable? Does one character stand out from the rest? When considering the film's editing, think about the pacing. Does the movie move too slowly? Do you get bored watching the film? A movie can be amazing, but if the ending is bad and unsatisfying, viewers may end up hating the entire movie. Did you find the ending compelling? Were you disappointed with how the storyline ended? Were all your questions about the storyline answered?

Think about the technical aspects of making the film like the camerawork, set designs, costumes, lighting and special effects. Is the camerawork steady or shaky? Are the sets believable? Do the costumes fit the storyline? Is the lighting too bright or too dark? Do the special effects add to the movie watching experience? Are they believable?

Listen to the audio quality and music. Is the dialogue too loud or too soft? If you can't hear what's being said or if the sound is overpowering, viewers will have a hard time following the storyline. If there's music in the film, does the score go along with the story? Is it necessary?

Examine the movie's budget and decide if the film was worth the money spent. You may be surprised or disappointed with the film's quality depending on the budget.

    • 5

Decide if the movie is worth seeing again. Did you enjoy it enough to tell a friend to see it? What is your final impression of the film? Was watching the movie worth your time? What was the film's cultural message or implication?
