How to Notate a Movie in a Sentence

Read two different news articles or reviews of the same movie and you might encounter two different methods that each author uses to notate the movie title in the piece. That is because there are different accepted style choices when it comes to punctuating a movie title. The particular choice you make in notating the movie title might depend on whether you also cite individual scene titles from the movie within your work.

Instructions

    • 1

Capitalize all the principal words within the title. Capitalize articles, conjunctions and prepositions shorter than four letters within the title, only when these words are the first or last word in the movie's title.

    • 2

Translate the title of a foreign movie into English, unless the movie is generally known and identifiable by its foreign title.

    • 3

Italicize the movie title or underline it. Italics are generally preferred at present time as underlining the title was done more in the past. Place quotation marks around the titles of individual scenes from the movie. If you are not notating individual scenes, it is also accepted practice to follow Step 4.

    • 4

Put quotation marks around the movie title.
