How to Correctly Cite a Title to a Movie

In this age of texting, where acronyms have replaced standard English language and formatting, it might not seem so important to correctly cite references, such as attributable articles or movie titles. An English teacher might disagree, however, and a grade on your English paper might reflect that disagreement. If you are a writer and incorrectly cite a movie title, it could look less than professional and possibly cost you future assignments.

Instructions

    • 1

List the movie title first in the citation using title case and italics. The 7th edition of the MLA Style Guide directs use of italics in titles over the older underline requirements. The title of the movie should be followed by a comma and a space.

    • 2

Type the name of the producer. The name should be preceded by the producer’s title or label, which may be abbreviated and followed by a comma. For example, “Prod. John Smith,” would be appropriate in a citation. The quotation marks included in this paragraph are for this paragraph’s formatting only and would not be part of the citation. The comma in the producer citation is to be followed by a space.

    • 3

Type the director’s name next preceded by his title, just as in the producer name. Director should be capitalized and may also be abbreviated as “Dir.” Add a comma and space.

    • 4

Type the name of the performers next with the first performer’s name being preceded by the title “Performers,” which may also be abbreviated as “Perf.” Include a space after the title and type the names of the performers, separating each with a comma and including the conjunction “and” prior to the name of the last performer.

    • 5

Cite the media type where viewed, such as “DVD.” Media type or descriptor will be capitalized and followed by a comma.

    • 6

Type the distributor of the film or recording, capitalized and followed by the year of the film’s release. For example, “Twentieth Century Fox, 2001” would be a correct citation. Add a period following the release year. A fictitious example of a complete movie citation would appear as follows: “This is My Movie, Prod. John Jones, Dir Jack Jones, Perf. Actor Jones, Actor Smith, and Actor James, DVD, At Home Films, 2011.”
