Do Digital Copies Work With iPods?

If you recently purchased a Blu-ray disc or DVD, you may have noticed it comes with a digital copy. By visiting a website and entering the specified code, it's possible to put a digital copy of the film on your computer. However, Apple's software controls make it difficult to put third-party content on your iPod. It is still possible to put digital copies on your iPod, but the method is different.
  1. iPods that Do and Don't Play Digital Copies

    • Early iPod models do not support digital copies, and some even lack screens capable of playing videos. Models such as the iPod Touch and third- and fourth-generation Nanos are capable of playing video. These devices support videos in standard and high-definition film formats. You can also play your digital copies on other video-enabled Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad. Ensure that an iPod has sufficient memory before attempting to download a digital copy.

    Discs

    • Many Blu-rays and DVDs come with an extra disc. This is the digital copy and will usually be labeled clearly. Most devices allow you to insert the digital copy and download it immediately. On your iPod, you must first open iTunes and log in to your Apple account. Once logged in, you can insert the digital copy into your computer's disc drive and open it in iTunes. Enter the redemption code printed on a piece of paper inside the film's case and download your digital copy onto your iPod.

    Codes

    • Some films do not come with the digital copy on a disc, however; instead they come only with a redemption code. However, it is still possible to download a digital copy. Log in to your account and click on the iTunes Store. On the right-hand side of the screen there's a box marked "Quick Links." Click on "Redeem" and enter the code to download a digital copy to an iPod. Without a digital copy of the film on disc, it's possible to download a digital copy only one time.

    Alternatives

    • The iPod does not support third-party content. This makes it impossible to legally put digital copies on your device unless you download it directly from iTunes. However, other MP3 players and portable devices lack these controls. In addition, you can bypass the process of putting digital copies on your iPod completely by purchasing a digital copy directly from the iTunes store.
