In blue lagoon movie were they cousins?

In the movie Blue Lagoon, released in 1980, the two main characters, Emmeline Lestrange and Richard Lestrange, are not related as cousins. They are complete strangers who become stranded together on a deserted island after their ship is destroyed in a storm.
