How to Clean & Repair Scratches on a DVD

You can clean and repair scratches on a DVD using a variety of inexpensive items you might already have around the house such as furniture polish, toothpaste or a banana. However, depending on the severity of the scratches on the DVD, results may vary from one DVD to the next.

  • Quality furniture polish
  • Toothpaste
  • Banana
  • Cloth

Instructions

  1. Using Pledge

    • 1

      Lay your DVD on a flat surface with the scratched surface facing up.

      Take a can of brand-name furniture polish and spray it onto the DVD's scratched surface.

      Rub the pledge onto the DVD using a soft cloth. Do so in a circular motion until you cover the entire surface (scratches and all) of the DVD with a layer of wax.

    Using Toothpaste

      Lay your DVD on a flat surface with the scratched surface facing up.

      Put a smear of toothpaste onto a soft cloth.

      Rub the toothpaste onto the DVD's surface in a circular motion until most of the scratches have disappeared.

      Clean the toothpaste residue off with water and let it air dry.

    Using a Banana

      Lay your DVD on a flat surface with the scratched surface facing up.

      Rub the inside of a banana peel onto the DVD's surface in a circular motion.

      Take a clean cloth and rub the waxy banana residue into the scratches on the DVD.

      Clean the DVD with water or glass cleaner and let it air dry.
