How to Locate Movie Theaters With Captions

The internet has made finding screenings of "captioned" films -- films that provide subtitles for the hearing impaired -- relatively easy. Although not all theaters provide the service, and not all films are released in captioned format, there are many opportunities for those who wish to see a captioned film to do so. Captioned films are shown in many theaters; finding local theaters that screen captioned films can be done quickly and conveniently right from home.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on a film that you would like to see. Your potential film choices are not limited to new releases, because many theaters that show second-run or late-run films also provide captioned versions. Be aware, however, that not all theaters offer the same services for the same films, and not all films are offered in captioned format.

Visit one of the main listing sites to see if your film is being shown in closed-captioned format. Captionfish.com and Fomdi.com are two of the most popular such sites. Each will provide you with several search options and listings for a number of theaters at once. If your film does not appear immediately in the site listings, Some sites, such as Captionfish.com, may also tell you the type of captioning that is provided, such as closed captioning (that are not seen by all viewers) or open captioning (subtitles that everybody sees).

Once the film's location and show times appear, check to make sure that the film is captioned. There should be a symbol denoting that the film is captioned, if that service is offered. At that point, you may be able to purchase a ticket online. If not, you will have to purchase your ticket in person at the theater.

When you arrive at the theater, make sure that you have tickets for the captioned showing or, if you haven't purchased your tickets yet, be sure to buy your tickets for the captioned showing of the film. Movie multiplexes may show the same film in several theaters at once but only one will have the captioned version. If you are unsure, ask an attendant which theater is showing the captioned version.
