How to Rent Israeli Movies

Israel has produced a stream of excellent films detailing the challenges and joys of life in the Jewish state. According to The Guardian, Israeli film was "insular, hemmed in by the restrictions of a tiny market for the Hebrew language," but has branched out in recent years with everything from touching dramas to colorful animated pieces, earning Israel an international audience and awards at film festivals across the globe."

Instructions

  1. Check the Local Video Store

    • 1

Check a local video store. Many movie rental places have sections stocked with international releases, particularly films that found success on the international market and were lauded at award shows, so check the shelves for Israeli features. While chain stores may only carry a few movies from Israel, independent and art house video rental stores may have a larger selection of international movies available, so shop around for the best selection. Also, if a store does not have a certain movie, speak with the manager about ordering it.

    • 2

Search the library. Often, libraries carry a selection of more obscure and offbeat movies, eschewing big blockbusters for international titles, art house favorites, documentaries and the like. Scour library movie sections for Israeli films, and if none are found, use the database to search for titles that other libraries may carry. Inquire about arranging an inter-library loan, or fill out a special request form to ask the library to carry more films from Israel.

    • 3

Sign up for a rental by mail service. Various outlets, like Blockbuster and Netflix, rent movies by mail, shipping copies to customers through the post office. Both companies offer tens of thousands of titles for rent, including Israeli movies and other international titles. Customers typically sign up for a subscription service that allows them to rent a certain number of films at one time, sending them back in a prepaid envelope after viewing.

    • 4

Ask Jewish community centers, schools and other organizations if they have films available for rent or loan, or even if they offer screenings from time to time. Jewish organizations might offer Israeli movies as a part of promoting Jewish identity and culture, so inquire as to what's available.
