How to Make Voice-Overs

In today's media-driven world, the need for quality media becomes stronger every day. Video productions, in their many forms, have one important aspect that many people seem to overlook: audio. If the audio lacks the right music, proper volume levels or a good voice-over, the whole project can be lacking right from the start. But you can learn how to solve problems before they arise and add value to any production by recording a quality voice-over on a reasonable budget.

Instructions

  1. Setup and Preperation

    • 1

At the soundproof recording studio set the snowball microphone on the microphone stand and connect the USB cord into the computer. Adjust the height accordingly until the microphone is comfortably level with the mouth of the voice-over talent.

    • 2

Have the voice-over talent read the voice-over production script and encourage her to say her lines aloud. This ensures that she becomes comfortable with what she is about to say without having to spend any unnecessary time rerecording her lines.

    • 3

While the voice-over actor is reading through and practicing his lines, turn on the computer and open up the audio recording software. Programs, such as Pro Tools 7LE or higher, is one program to use. If that is not available, software like Garage Band or Audacity are suitable, low-cost substitutions.

    • 4

Create the project files. It is important to be as organized as possible when recording audio for voice-overs. Ensure that you label what you are recording by chapter, scene and line numbers. Doing this before and during the recording process helps when you are editing and saves countless hours trying to sort your way through a jumbled mess of audio files looking for the best takes.

    • 5

Check the audio levels. Have the voice-over actor speak into the microphone so you can test the quality of the connection. Adjust the recording levels accordingly and apply any filters if needed. This helps ensure that the recorded audio won't go above or below the optimum levels.

    Recording the Voice-Over

    • 6

Ensure that the talent is ready to speak and give a three-second countdown, either aloud or visually with your fingers. This will notify her that it is time to record the line before you press the record button.

    • 7

Record and playback every line in the voice-over production script. Using the professional reference monitor headphones allows you to know exactly what you record. Many times you will record something that sounds great when spoken, only to find out later in the editing room that it was a bad take. Recording every line at least three times can drastically increase the chances of acquiring the perfect take, while giving you more possibilities for versatility in the editing process.

    • 8

Save and back up all of the audio files that were created from the session.

    • 9

Import the audio files from the voice-over recording session into the audio editing software.

    • 10

Review each audio file and choose only the best takes to edit. Find, sync, edit, apply the proper effects and add filters to increase the quality of the audio. If the post-production process is not a one-person operation, collaborate with the video editor to create a audio visual presentation. Mix the audio to the video and export the final product. Review the finished product with a test audience for quality assurance purposes before distribution. If you are satisfied with the results and don't have to go back to rerecord any lines, your job is now complete.
