How to Get Started in Animatronics

Animatronics is a form of technology used by robot technicians to animate robotic forms, such as mechanical puppets, dinosaurs, aliens and likenesses of historic people, through computer animation, special effects, makeup and sound. Technicians often create and operate animatronics used in movies, amusement parks and even museum exhibits. If you would like to pursue a career in animatronics, it may be beneficial to combine a strong academic program in robotics or mechanical engineering with strong analytical, math and science skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Earn a diploma. Take higher-level math and science courses such as calculus, geometry and physics, as these courses can help prepare you for the rigorous math and science coursework required in many college tech programs and animatronics operations. Some colleges will require applicants to have achieved overall "B"-average-or-higher GPAs in core academic college-prep coursework and to have posted strong standardized test scores.

    • 2

Research several community colleges and universities. Look for schools that offer robotic engineering or applied science degrees with specializations in animatronics or similar fields. Some schools do not offer a specific degree in animatronics.

    • 3

Request an appointment with a program adviser at a local community college or university to discuss general curriculum requirements, course offerings, class availability and internship opportunities.

    • 4

Submit your application, personal statement or essay, high school transcripts, standardized test scores and fees to the school that best matches your academic goals and personal needs. After you successfully complete all coursework and program requirements, you will receive your degree, which you'll need for entry-level animatronics career opportunities.

    • 5

Apply for jobs in the animatronics field. Network with your instructors to inquire about available job opportunities. Check career-related websites specifically geared toward hiring applicants with degrees in robotics engineering and mechanical engineering or with a specialization in animatronics. Visit the websites of animatronics companies and search for a link to their "careers" web pages. Any openings the firms have should be listed here.
