How to Shoot Video on a White Seamless Background

An actor who moves against a pure white background can give your video a clean, modern look. This effect is often called "infinite white." It's similar to a green screen effect, in that it uses a brightly lit, evenly colored background that contrasts with its subject and can easily be removed in post-production. However, unlike a green screen, you can often leave the background in place if the video is shot skillfully.

Instructions

    • 1

Instruct your actor to stay as far away from the background as possible. You need at least 6 feet of separation so that the reflected light from the background doesn't spill over onto the actor, causing him to look desaturated around the edges.

    • 2

Turn the camera's zebra on. The zebra setting creates stripes over any objects that is clipping, or pure white.

    • 3

Adjust the camera's aperture until the subject is properly exposed.

    • 4

Examine the camera's LCD or viewfinder image to make sure the background is completely covered with the zebra stripes. If not, increase the light on the background.

    • 5

Shoot at an angle that will keep the background behind all parts of the actor, his clothing and any props he's holding at all times.
