How to Airbrush Smoke Effects

Creating smoke effects with an airbrush is possible on all kinds of backgrounds, such as metal, paper, vehicles and stone. A smoke effect is easy to create and makes great practice for a new airbrush artist. All that is required to create smoke is one color and a few zigzag lines. Artists create smoke to come out of objects such as flames, cigarettes, hot coffee and BBQ grills. Practicing will improve your technique as well as help you find a unique style.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the airbrush approximately 3-to-5 inches from the canvas and begin by drawing a straight line in the direction the smoke is blowing.

    • 2

Create zigzag lines at the top where the smoke starts to disperse. Have the lines going in different directions and crossing over each other.

    • 3

Thicken the lines by going back over them in a zigzag motion. Create a swirling motion when you reach the curves to create wisps of smoke.

    • 4

Make thick smoke by clustering the smoke close together.
