How to Make a Studio Set for a Movie

The area of production design, or set design, covers everything from finding a designer to help you to create the look of your film to building sets. After you've written your script, done your breakdowns and know what you'll need, you must have a production meeting with your production designer to plan how to achieve your visual objectives.

Work with your production designer to interpret the script visually. A production designer illustrates the scenes, creates set design and is in charge of all the sets. If you are producing a big studio film, you’ll probably have both a production designer and an art director involved in creating your film's look.

    • 2

Use a design study model to previsualize your sets and anything that will appear on camera. Ask your production designer to hire a model maker, who creates a design study model from a foam core, based on the designer's sketches.

    • 3

Make sure your production designer brings a set estimator to prepare a department budget (everything from stuff to materials and construction costs), which later is given to you for approval. If it is too high, ask him or her to reduce it. Some studios insist on the production designer signing off on a final budget.

    • 4

Hire a construction coordinator, who will supervise all crew purchases, rentals, equipment and disposal. To build your sets, you need additional labor. The construction coordinator hires foremen, painters, carpenters and scenic painters to build your sets for you.

    • 5

Bring in a set dresser or set decorator to work with your production designer to provide the sets with all the furnishings that you need for your scenes. Ask the swing gang to move the furniture or whatever you need to the set. Ensure that your property master purchases and rents your props. You may want to ask your property master to handle special effects props as well (if you have any). You’re done. Have a good shoot!
