How to Get a Permit to Shoot a Film in New York

New York City is a popular place to shoot movies. With iconic locations like the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge, many filmmakers come to the city each year in order to shoot their productions. Filmmakers include established directors, producers, actors and other talent as well as up and coming newcomers from local institutions like New York University as well as those from all corners of the world. The City of New York encourages film productions by offering free permits to them.

      Get an insurance policy for the shoot. The minimum required insurance is $1 million. The certificate of insurance must be delivered directly to the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting and cannot be sent by fax or email. The office has a list of insurance brokers on its website at nyc.gov/html/film/html/resources/forms_guidelines.shtml.

      Fill out an application for a permit, and print it. It can be found online at the MOFTB website or at the MOFTB office at 1697 Broadway, Suite 602.

      Deliver the permit application in person to the MOFTB. As long as the certificate of insurance is present, the permit will be approved.
