How to Display Movie Stills

William Randolph Hearst supposedly said, "You furnish the pictures, and I'll furnish the war." To start an effective publicity campaign, generate press and ultimately sell your film to a distributor, you must create a newsworthy, well-designed press kit that contains production stills and behind-the-scenes shots of your actors and your creative team. The production stills from your movie belong to you. Your PR agent releases the stills from your film to the press upon request.

Hire a PR agent to help you design your press kit and advise you on your media campaigns. A PR agent will organize your press screenings, write your press releases and send your press kit to the journalists interested in writing about your film. A good PR agent will recommend a graphic designer to work with you on your press kit as well as on your website.

Work with your graphic designer to create an effective newsworthy press kit and an intriguing website. Your graphic designer will ask you to send him all the stills for your press kit and website in JPEGs. This is a method of compression for photo images that provides a variety of storage sizes and quality. Therefore, you will need to digitize all your production stills and send them to your designer via e-mail in a required size, along with your captions.

Make sure you include at least five stills from your production in your press kit. Many festivals will require you to have an electronic press kit with three to five stills as a part of your submission process. Usually, you'll need a still of the director working with actors; a couple of shots of your lead actors in character; one photo of your cinematographer and a still of your sets. These stills will give an overview of the production and your creative process.
