Disney Inventions

Between Walt Disney's start in animation in 1920 and his death in 1966, he had been given 30 Academy Awards, the Medal of Freedom presented by Lyndon Johnson and a number of honorary degrees, and had made 81 animated feature films. His technological invention, the multiplane camera, reinvented the animated film industry. The Walt Disney Corporation has continued in his name to invent a number of innovative items.
  1. Mulitplane Camera

    • Walt Disney invented the multiplane camera to assist in the realism of animated film. Before the multiplane camera, animators could only photograph two dimensional paintings. Even though a succession of paintings could create movement, they were unable to portray depth accurately. The multiplane camera broke a painting up into layers according to their supposed distance from the viewer. Each layer was placed on a parallel plane and the planes were spaced apart from each other. The farthest item, such as the moon, was at the bottom and the closest item at the top. When the camera viewed the image from above, it looked just like the two dimensional image but when the camera moved toward or away from the painting, the layers provide a realistic visual depth. This invention revolutionized animated film and Walt Disney won an Academy Award for the first feature created with this camera, "This Old Mill." The Disney Corporation was granted a patent on the multiplane camera on May 1, 1940.

    Marine Mammal Communication Device

    • This device is used to communicate with dolphins. According to the Patent Genius website, the U.S. patent was issued to the Walt Disney Corporation on February 28, 1995. The device includes a submersible keyboard with hollow keys, visual or echo locatable objects that are associated with words, a switch that can be activated by the dolphin and an audio generator. According to Patent Genius, it worked through association between sounds, switches, objects and keys. A dolphin could indicate a certain number of things and the machine would produce words based on what the animal had indicated.

    Disney Dreams Play Floor

    • Disney Dream is the Disney corporations 4,000 passenger cruise ship. Included in this luxury Disney adventure is their new invention, a play floor consisting of 28 High Definition panels and 16 LED sensors surrounding the floor, according to AOL Travel. The play floor games are highly interactive and include movement-sensitive video games. Kids are directed by Disney characters, such as Peter Pan or Goofy, to follow commands on the screen. Instead of simply watching the stories, the kids become part of them, such as soaring along with Peter Pan in the clouds. The floor is made for kids between the ages of 3 and 10, some games even require teams of up to 16 players. There are a dozen games according to AOL, and each has several levels of difficulty. One game is like hockey but instead of using a puck, the kids use sensors built into the screens.
