How Do I Track a Moving Subject Using Video Editing Software?

Video editors can place a moving subject into a film clip, and track its movements by using an editing and effects program such as Apple's Motion. To achieve this, editors apply video commands within the program, known as behaviors, to permit the moving subject and the video clip to fall in sync. Tracking the subjects' movements using program behaviors can make the subject seem as if it were always part of the movie.

Instructions

    • 1

Add a new "Container" to the Motion project by navigating to the layers window, then clicking on the "Plus" button. Containers are similar to folders, where multiple files are placed inside. Rename the container by double-clicking the text, then typing in a new name and pressing the "Enter" key.

    • 2

Transfer the movie clip and other files into the open project. Click the "File Browser" tab on the side menu, then select the file from the menu list at the bottom. Choose the file from the window, then click "Import," or drag it into the container. Repeat this step to add more files to the project.

    • 3

Place the moving subject into the video clip by dragging the clip's layer into the canvas, then dropping it in. Once placed, use the image markers around the subject and scale it to a desired size. Click the subject after scaling, and position it where it is to appear.

    • 4

Click on the image of the subject to select it. Navigate to the options menu at the top of the screen and select "Add Behavior," followed by "Motion Tracking." Select "Match Move" from the list that appears. Open the "Heads Up Display" (HUD) floating window, also found in the options menu, after adding the behavior.

    • 5

Choose "Position, Scale and Rotate" from the "Adjust" section of the HUD window. Navigate to the project canvas, and drag the subject's cross hair trackers that appear on screen to areas of high or low contrast. The cross hair trackers are indicated by a circle with a plus sign inside. The placement of the trackers should follow the camera's panning direction.

    • 6

Select the "Analyze" button in the "Movement" section of the HUD window. Analyze will track the position, scale and rotation for each tracker belonging to the moving subject, in each frame of the movie clip. Play the movie clip back after analyzing by pressing the "Play" button under the project canvas to ensure that the subject is being tracked as desired.
