What is vamping?

In music, vamping is the repetition of a short sequence of chords or a musical phrase. Chords are often played in an improvised fashion without a structured form. Vamping is often used to accompany songs or to provide a background for instrumental solos. It is also used in jazz, blues, and rock music, where it is often called a “vamp.” Vamping can provide a sense of momentum or energy to a song or instrumental, and it can also be used to create a mood or atmosphere.
