Who is Gary glitter?

Paul Francis Gadd (born 8 May 1944), known professionally as Gary Glitter, is an English former glam rock singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. After forming a band in 1960,[1] he recorded "Rock and Roll" (Part 1 and Part 2) (1972), which sold over 4 million copies internationally and reached No. 2 and No. 78, respectively, on the US Billboard Hot 100.[2][3] Glitter achieved two other US top 20 hits: "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" (1973) peaked at No. 9, and "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again" (1972) at No. 19.[3] Although he failed to match his 1972–73 success in the US, he managed a string of UK hits through 1978; he also had hits from the mid-1980s through early 1990s.[4] During this period, his stage antics—particularly his glam make-up—were known internationally, as was his trademark chant of "Rock and Roll!".[5]

Glitter's career went into decline during the late 1970s due to various financial, interpersonal, and legal troubles in the US and UK.[6] After a hiatus during the mid-1980s from which he later revived his career, his reputation became permanently damaged from 1999 onwards after his convictions for child sexual abuse and child pornography offences.[7] In 2006, Glitter returned to Vietnam, where he began serving a lengthy prison sentence after he was convicted during a police investigation of child molestation and other sex crimes he is believed to have committed during his first stay there four years previously.[8] In January 2007, the UK issued a global request to locate Glitter after charges were made public that more cases of child molestation were uncovered that took place in Southeast Asia in the later 2000s following his Vietnam conviction and deportation to the UK as an undesirable citizen.[9] He returned to England and served nine years out of his 16-year term before he was eventually set free.[10] He was deported back to the UK again upon the completion of his prison sentence in October 2018.[11]

Throughout his career, Glitter received two Golden Globe nominations[12] and became famous as a flamboyant showman in glitter suits with glitter make-up and his rock catchphrase.[13] He has sold between 20 and 40 million records internationally.[14]
