In 1996, Dolla was caught on tape at Las Vegas's MGM Grand Hotel as part of Tupac Shakur's entourage when Shakur was shot four times in a drive-by shooting. While Shakur died 6 days after the shooting from internal bleeding and respiratory distress, Dolla was unscathed. Later, Dolla was convicted of two counts of marijuana possession with intent to distribute, three counts of possessing a concealed weapon, one count of resisting and delaying a peace officer, and one count of making terrorist threats. He was sentenced to 12 to 24 months in state prison.
Death
On May 18, 2009, Dolla was shot and killed in a parking lot in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles during an attempted carjacking. He tried to run from the gunman but was shot multiple times in the back and chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene at the age of 21. In November 2009, Los Angeles Police Department detectives arrested Aubrey Louis Berry after his DNA was allegedly found on the stolen vehicle used by Dolla's killers. Berry was the lead suspect in a series of robberies and carjackings in the area. He was awaiting trial when he died of a reported asthma attack in August 2011.
Several tribute songs were released in Dolla's honor. On the one-year anniversary of his death, fellow California rapper Snoop Dogg released the song "My Tribute (For Dolla)". Lil' Wayne also wrote and recorded the song "Dolla and Dre" (also known as "Dolla") for his album Rebirth, which was released on February 2, 2010.
