At the end of the story The Bet, the attitude towards gods is one of skepticism. The protagonist, Ivan Ivanovich, is initially respectful of the religious beliefs of his companion, but as the story progresses, he begins to question the existence of God. He argues that if there is a God, he would not allow innocent people to suffer or let evil exist in the world. By the end of the story, Ivan Ivanovich has completely lost his faith in God and is instead convinced that the only way to achieve salvation is through human effort and willpower.
