What was an utopian community?

A utopian community is an intentional community whose members share common ideological goals and often live communally. Utopian communities often practice alternative social and economic structures and often share utopian social or political ideals such as equality, common ownership, and communal living. Utopians often believed they were creating the perfect society, although many attempts to create utopian societies have failed. Many utopian communities were founded in the United States in the 19th century.
