How did one direction know each other?

The members of One Direction, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Liam Payne, met as individual contestants on the seventh season of the British television series The X Factor in 2010. They were initially formed as a group during the competition by The X Factor judges and went on to finish in third place.
