Magic Tricks With a Regular Deck Revealed

The most impressive way to perform a magic trick is to make it clear that there is nothing unusual about the set-up. Doing card tricks with a trick deck that you aren't able to show the audience can hinder the effect. Knowing how to perform magic using a standard deck of playing cards will help you prove that you didn't get any help from special equipment. There are a number of tricks that will impress onlookers using a regular deck of cards.
  1. Reds and Blacks

    • Using a standard deck of playing cards, separate the cards into the red suits and black suits in any order. Make two separate stacks and then place the black cards on top of the red ones and do not shuffle.

Divide the decks back into red and black piles and place them on the table in front of two volunteers. Ask them to shuffle the piles as many times as they want. Ask them to pull any card from their pile, memorize it, and place it anywhere they want in the other person's pile.

Ask them to shuffle a few more times. Have them return the cards to their positions on the table and then grab one stack and place it on top of the other stack.

Turn the faces of the cards toward you and begin rifling through the cards furiously. You will see the selected cards because they will be the only black in the red deck and the only red in the black deck. After going through the cards, pull out the two cards and deal them out on the table to reveal the answer.

    Tight Deck

    • To perform Tight Deck you will need one deck and the cardboard case it came in. Take the deck out of the box and hand the cards to a volunteer. Tell them to go through the cards and choose any card they are drawn to.

Once they choose their card, ask them to hold it and concentrate on it. You take the rest of the deck, place it in the box and tap the bottom of the box on a table to pack the cards down. With the lid of the box left open, grip the deck tight with the tips of the finger and ask the person to slide the card back in. Apply enough pressure to stop the card slightly short of the rest of the deck as they slide it in.

When you remove the deck again, the card will be sticking up just slightly. Slide the card out and peek to identify the card, then shuffle through the cards, making them appear randomized even more.

    Force Prediction

    • Write a specific card down on a piece of paper and fold it up. Place that card on top of the deck before beginning. You will appear to know ahead of time which card will be selected.

Hold the cards in one hand with the middle, ring and pinky finger resting on top of the deck. Use the other to riffle the front edge of the cards toward a volunteer and ask them to tell you when to stop. When they say stop, cut the deck at that card, pull off the top part of the deck and set it aside. The fingers will grip the top card and pull it onto the top of the bottom half of the deck unnoticed. Now they appear to have stopped at the card you knew they would.
