10 Easy Magic Tricks

Magic tricks can be a source of entertainment at parties, at a show or with a small group of friends. Many tricks are challenging and take lots of practice, but others are easy and can be mastered in less than 60 minutes. These magic tricks appear difficult but are in fact really simple.
  1. Card Bend

    • Cut out a tiny strip of a card and glue the top onto the back of another card. Make sure to line it up so that it doesn't stick out to the audience. Pretend to randomly choose a card or pick from the top of the deck. Hold the card with the face toward the audience. Pull on the strip to make the card bend as you wave your hand over it.

    Number of Moves

    • Place 11 specific cards in a row in this order: 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, A, J, 10, 9, 8, 7. Ask someone to move the cards one at a time in order from their left end to their right end. They can move as many as they like, but they must remember how many. Turn your back. When they are finished, turn around. Count seven cards from your left to your right and flip it over. Whatever the card is, that's how many cards they moved.

    Vanishing Coin

    • Paste a circular piece of white paper on a clear wine glass. Use a matching white tablecloth. Place the wine glass upside down. Place a penny on the side of the wine glass. Cover the wine glass with a handkerchief. Move it over the penny swiftly. Take the handkerchief off. The penny appears to have vanished. Cover the glass with the handkerchief again. Move it off of the penny. The penny reappears.

    Vanishing Card

    • Cut a toothpick to the size of the width of a playing card. Push the toothpick into the hem of a handkerchief. Spread the deck of cards on a table. Cover the cards with the handkerchief. Pick up the handkerchief by the ends of the toothpick so it looks like you picked up a card. Take the corner of the handkerchief, drop the toothpick and shake it out.

    Snap Vanish

    • Place a coin on a table. Wave your hands mysteriously over the coin. Snap your fingers against the coin so it flies backward off the table. If you do this quickly enough and wave your hands around, it looks like the coin vanished.

    Your Card?

    • Organize the deck so all the cards face the same way. Tell the volunteer to pick a card, memorize it and put it back. As they memorize, flip the deck around. As they put it back, it will be upside down. Search for the only upside down card and present it.

    Mind Reading

    • Tape a small piece of pencil lead to your thumb so that you can still write with it. Take a pencil and pretend to write something on a notepad. Put it behind your back. Ask the volunteer to think of a number. When she gives you her answer, explain that you already knew her answer and wrote it on the notepad. As you explain, write the number using your thumb.

    Bottle Wand Trick

    • Give a non-translucent bottle to a volunteer to examine. Take the bottle back and give the volunteer a stick that is longer than the bottle to examine. While he is examining it, discretely drop a rectangular eraser into the bottle. Put the stick into the bottle and wedge it into the eraser. Tip it upside down. The eraser blocks the entrance so the stick does not fall out.

    Magic Math Trick

    • Take the year it is now and multiply it by two. Right this number on notebook paper and seal it inside an envelope. Ask a volunteer to write down four numbers that answer your questions and then total them. Questions: What was the year you were born? What was the year of an important event in your life? What age will you will be turning this year or did you turn this year? How many years have passed since the important event? If the volunteer didn't lie or make a mathematical error, their number should equal the number you wrote down.

    Pepper Separation

    • Put soap on your fingers. Pour water and pepper into a cup. Ask a volunteer to put his fingers into the cup and try to separate the pepper. He cannot do it. Put your soapy fingers into the cup and the pepper separates.
