How to Perform Waltz Footwork for Twinkle

The twinkle is a variation of the basic waltz box step. It's well worth learning because it is can be partly or completely in the promenade position, and it makes the woman look especially lovely as she turns back and forth, letting her skirt swing.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with the basic box step. Take a forward step using the left foot and rise up onto the toes on count 1. With your right foot, step up and to the right, staying on your toes on count 2.

    • 2

Shift your weight back to your left foot instead of bringing it next to your left foot on count 3. Put the heel of your left foot down.

    • 3

Step forward and to your left with your right foot, crossing your right foot in front of your left foot. Stay on your toes. Turn a little to your left, leading the woman to turn a little to her right.

    • 4

Take one step forward with the left foot, staying on the toes. Shift your weight back to your right foot and put the heel of your right foot down.

    • 5

Step forward and right using the left foot, crossing the left foot in front of the right foot. Stay on your toes. Turn a little to your right, leading the woman to turn a little to her left.

    • 6

Move forward on the right foot, staying on your toes. Shift your weight back to your left foot and put the heel of your left foot down.

    • 7

Repeat the twinkle or return to the box step.
