How to Move When Waltzing

Waltz steps form a pattern shaped like a box, with one half-box moving forward and the other moving back. A half-box consists of moving one foot forward or back, then moving the other sideways and then bringing the feet together. The leader and follower alternate moving back and forward as one's steps mirror the other's. Each half-box has three counts, the first slow and the next two fast. The dancers rotate as they move, generally shifting one-quarter of a rotation with each half-box. At this pace, the dancers make a full rotation once two boxes have been completed.
