Instructions

Choose your shoes based on the knowledge that you will be subjecting your feet and legs to a lot of pounding, spinning and sliding. The most important consideration is minimizing foot strain. Swing dancing shoes come in a variety of styles, some of which recall the styles in the 40’s and 50’s when the dances originated. Your best bet is smooth soles, either leather or suede, which have the least friction. Some can be worn outside but others must only be worn on the dance floor.

Get the right size. Some shoes have European sizing, but it’s important to try them on to be sure they’re right for your feet. Wide and narrow feet may do better with some styles. Some shoes come with insoles that you can put inside, or have room for your own customized orthotics.

Try the shoes on to see if your toes have enough room. They should be comfortable, but they shouldn’t move around too much. Your heel should be secure but not too tight. Do some dance moves to see how you feel. Stay on a carpeted surface so you can exchange or return them if necessary.

Pick a style of shoe you’ll enjoy wearing. You will see dancers with high-style retro outfits, including shoes. Two-toned black and white wing tips are very popular, as are wedges. Whatever you choose, the point is to have fun!

Store your shoes with a shoe tree to maintain their shape. Wipe them off when they get soiled so they’ll always look great.
