What is sua-ku-sua?

The sua-ku-sua (in full, “Sua Ku Sua; O Le Ao O Le Nu’u”) was a political association of Tongan nationalists who, in the early 20th century, opposed Tongan government cooperation with the British overlords and advocated for a more direct representation of the people in the Tongan monarchy. This political movement took place alongside the Mau movement in neighbouring Western Samoa (1918-1920), and was ultimately unsuccessful. Their leader, Siaosi Tupou Mateialona, was exiled in 1913.
