Ngā Tamatoa was a group of Māori activists and educators who were concerned about the decline of the Māori language. They established the first kohanga reo (Māori language nest) in Auckland as a way to immerse young children in the language and culture.
The movement quickly gained momentum, and now there are over 400 kohanga reo throughout New Zealand. They have played a significant role in revitalizing the Māori language and have helped to create a new generation of fluent Māori speakers.
