What is hip hop culture?

Hip hop culture is a global art culture, encompassing dance, graffiti, music, and urban fashion that evolved among African American and Latino American communities during the 1970s in the Bronx, New York City.[1] This cultural practice primarily features four pillars of hip hop—rapping, turntablism/DJing, b-boying/breakdancing, and graffiti writing.[2] It is generally associated with a certain lifestyle including street fashion—like oversized sports t-shirts, baseball caps, gold and platinum jewelry worn as status symbols—sampling, beatboxing, hip hop slang;[3] as well as an ideology emphasizing the importance of community as expressed through block parties.[4]
