What is alitaptap folk dance?

Alitaptap (English: Firefly) is a Philippine folk dance originating from the province of Leyte that mimics fireflies flying at night using handheld lights while dancers sway as one, similar to fireflies swarming during summer.

Dance Description

Alitaptap is considered an abstract form of folk dance because of it’s abstract concept – fireflies and its light. Performers sway their wrists while twirling bamboo stick with lights attached at its end to portray how a firefly moves and emits it’s light at night.

Costumes consist of either Maria Clara dress for female performers and barong tagalog for male performers, as it is influenced by Spanish influence during their time of settlement or Filipino tribal wear (i.e. malong) depending on where a festival showcases dance performances with Alitaptap as dance of choice from other Leyte towns and cities which usually is held during fiesta celebrations of some Catholic patron saints as an offering and devotion with dance.
