We experienced the Waltz in the 1800s, the Swing and Lindy Hop in the 1940s. By 1980, dancers were doing the Soul Train. We have gone from social dancing in party clubs to kicking up our heels on TV dance programs and videos. Time has bought in new styles and new steps for dancing in the 21st century.
  1. The New Line Dance

    • The new dance for the 21st century began with the A-Town Stomp. This dance was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and involves stepping and stomping in the line dance. It has also been referred to as the Atlanta Stomp.

    Shaking it in Harlem

    • The Harlem Shake came out of Harlem, New York, in 2002. This dance consists of shoulder movements and the body being jerked and popped in all kinds of positions. This dance is not a line dance, nor is it a "couples" dance. This is a dance for individuals who likes to shake the body out of control while dancing to rap music. Though this dance was created in 2002, it has gained popularity among the young. They are still doing the Harlem Shake when the right music is played.

    • The rhythm of the beat always makes you move, and so it was in 2005 with the Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It dance. This is another hip hop dance originating out of Atlanta, Georgia. You do this dance to the rap music that has the same name as the dance, "Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It," by Dem Franchise Boys.

One such dance is the Chicken Noodle Soup, originating from Harlem, New York. The Chicken Noodle Soup dance started off as a street dance in 2006. With this hip hop dance, there is a lot of leg and foot action. The beat is fast, so the movement of the dance is rather fast as you make your body move. This dance is performed with street music poetry or rap as it is called.

    Time to Walk it Out
