Step-by-Step Bhangra Lessons

Bhangra dancing originated in Punjab, India, as a celebratory dance at harvest time. Indians incorporated the bhangra into weddings, New Year's celebrations and other parties. Special songs are sung and instruments such as the flute and a special drum called the dholak---similar to a bongo---are used. Today, bhangra has become popular all over the world. It's performed in the traditional manner, or combined with hip-hop and reggae. Bhangra is a lively and fun dance for people of all ages.
  1. The Chamawal Circle

    • Start by facing forward with your hands on your hips. Bring your right foot forward, heel down and toes up. Repeat with your left leg, and then repeat again with each leg. As you step with the left leg for the second time, turn 90 degrees to your left. Then repeat the same steps with your right and left legs.

Again, on the left leg's second step, turn another 90 degrees (now you're facing the opposite direction from your original position). Repeat the steps with your right and left legs, turning another 90 degrees on the left leg's second step.

The sequence is right step, left step, right step, turn/left step (do the last in one move). Right, left, right, turn/left.

Repeat the steps once more until you are again facing front. End with your left heel down and toes pointed up. You've completed "the circle"! As you become comfortable with the steps, you can add a small hop when changing legs.

Now add some hand movements to this routine.
As you bring your right foot forward for the first step, bend slightly at the waist. Hold your arms out in front of you, elbows slightly bent, and cross them at the wrists. Then, keeping the arms in this position, do a rowing motion, twice. This should be a smooth and delicate movement, all completed with the one step.
Do this same hand movement with the left leg.
Remember, you're doing the right and left steps twice before you turn. The rowing motion is for the first set of steps. For the second set, and as you turn, do the following:
As you point your right heel/toe, raise your right arm and put your left hand on your hip. Keep your arms in these positions as you turn and point your left heel/toe. With each step, you can flick your wrist to give your hand a twirl.

So, the arm movement sequence combined with the steps is:
      Right step/row and row
      Left step/row and row
Right step/raise arm and hand on hip
      Turn/left step.

    Make It Lively

    • The bhangra is a lively dance. So once you feel comfortable with the moves, speed it up. Also, work on making the hand movements graceful. Try to find some bhangra or other Indian music to accompany your dance steps. Then join the bhangra and Bollywood craze.
