New Jersey Dance Club Rules

New Jersey dance clubs are well known, particularly after increased interest following shows such as "True Life: Jersey Shore" and MTV's "Jersey Shore" reality television program became popular among teens and young adults. Club rules vary by establishment; however, the primary issues covered by the rules remain the same at each club.
  1. Age Limits

    • Age restrictions are the most important rules to pay attention to when selecting a club, as they are non-negotiable. While an individual may be able to get into a club with a shirt that doesn't quite meet the code, an underage individual will not be let into a club with an age restriction. The strictest age limits are at the over-21 clubs, which admit only those who are of the legal drinking age. College students looking to go out in a group that includes those who are legal and those who have not turned 21 can attend an 18-plus club. Some 18-plus clubs will serve alcohol, with club goers over 21 being given a bracelet that allows them to get bar service. Dancers under 18 will find it more difficult to locate a club they can attend; however, there are establishments that provide a dancing outlet for teenagers.

    Dress Codes

    • Dress codes can be very strict in some establishments, treated as seriously as age limits, or they can be more relaxed. Common items that are not permitted in more restrictive clubs include tennis shoes, blue jeans and T-shirts. Most clubs feature a casual dress code, with guidelines for recommended attire such as a simple collared shirt; however, more relaxed outfits will be permitted. More restrictive clubs will require dress attire for male and female club goers, and enforce a strict code that cannot be violated. Many clubs along the Jersey Shore allow for summer attire to be worn inside.

    Personal Conduct

    • Many of the more popular clubs will have lines outside the door that you must wait on before being admitted inside. These lines form when the maximum occupancy of the building is reached, either as a result of fire code regulations or the management's occupancy limits. Attempting to cut in line is not permitted, and strongly discouraged by others in line. Once inside the club, dancers must adhere to the establishment's codes of conduct. Individuals showing signs of excessive inebriation, those who are causing disruption for other club goers, or individuals who are acting overly aggressive are likely to be expelled from most New Jersey dance clubs.
