Put on some music that has a strong beat and runs 4-5 minutes in length. Hip-hop music is usually the best for this type of dance. Feel the beat and dance as you would normally, making quick movements with your shoulders, arms and legs. Stop moving and pause every few beats, or as it becomes comfortable. Gradually add more pauses and make the movements in between quicker and more "jerky" to the rhythm of the song.
Move slowly or at half-tempo to the song for several seconds and then add a pause. Follow the pause with a series of quick movements then pause again. Return to the slow motion moves and repeat. Mix up the combination of slow and fast movements, separating them with long and short pauses. This will create an illusion of a film that intermittently changes speed and will make the jerky movements more extreme.
Add in wild moves after every few pauses. Imitate a puppet that is either being tugged on or a puppet that is missing strings. Move in liquid-like form (pretend that you have no bones or structure), keeping the movements flowing and continuous. Fall or stumble around and return to regular movements to add variety to your dancing, or vibrate your whole body (like you are shaking or shivering from being cold) after pauses. Keep trying a variety of strange and erratic motions while still pausing and going back to jerky movements. After some practice, try to never do the same dance twice so as to keep your style expressive.
