What muscles are used to walk?

Main muscles:

- Gluteus maximus: Hip extension

- Quadriceps (rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius): Knee extension

- Hamstrings (semitendinosus, semimembranosus, biceps femoris): Knee flexion, hip extension

- Calf muscles (gastrocnemius, soleus): Ankle plantarflexion

Secondary muscles:

- Lats & lower abdominals

- Pecs, triceps & upper abdominals

- Core musculature, especially the oblique

- Upper thoracic stabilizers (rhomboids)

Synergist muscles:

- Tibialis anterior: dorsiflexion (lifting up front part of foot).

- Tibialis posterior: inversion (turning inward), plantar flexion.

- Fibularis longus & brevis: eversion (turning outward), plantar flexion.

Antagonist muscles:

- Hip flexors

- Knee flexors

- Ankle dorsiflexors
