How to Do an Elbow Roll With a Baton

Baton twirling combines the dedication and fitness of any competitive sport with the grace and rhythm of dance. The sport has evolved from the rifle twirling of armies on the march into a peaceful activity that can be both competitive or purely for pleasure or entertainment. While accomplished baton twirlers require years of focused practice, there are basic moves, like the Elbow Roll, that any beginner can master with a little coordination.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the baton in your right hand, around the center of the shaft. Place your left fist beneath your chin, bending your left arm so that it is parallel to the floor, with your elbow extended forward from your chin.

    • 2

Place the back of your right hand under your upper left arm. The baton should rest firmly against your left arm, angled a little toward your face.

    • 3

Roll the baton from your right hand, outside your left elbow, and in toward your left wrist, still situated below your chin.

    • 4

Extend your left arm forward slowly when you feel the baton rolling over your left wrist. Keep your arm flat and parallel to the floor. The baton should be at about a 45-degree angle.

    • 5

Grasp the baton with your left hand once it has rolled over your left wrist. You can also choose to catch the baton with your right hand in conclusion to your trick.
