How to Decoupage With Paint

Decoupage consists of gluing paper cut-outs onto objects to form unique, personalized designs. The art form originated in China in the 12th century, brought over by Siberian nomads who used decoupage to decorate their tombs. However, decoupage designs can encompass more than paper and adhesive. For example, paint can add texture, color and depth to your decoupage projects. Not only can you use paint to create your designs, you can also use paint to seal them.

Instructions

  1. Paint as a Base

    • 1

Sponge an acrylic craft paint of your choice over the object you wish to decoupage. Allow it to dry.

    • 2

Apply a thin coat of decoupage adhesive to your project, using another sponge brush.

    • 3

Add cut outs of pictures, photos, stickers or wallpaper you wish to have cover the object, before the adhesive dries.

    • 4

Coat the finished project in more decoupage adhesive or white school glue and allow it to dry.

    Paint as an Accent

    • 5

Apply a thin coat of decoupage adhesive to the object you wish to decorate, using a sponge brush.

    • 6

Add cut outs of pictures, photos, stickers or wallpaper you wish to have cover the object, before the adhesive dries.

    • 7

Spray metallic, glitter, pearlescent, hammered or stone paints lightly over the cut-outs for a textured, personalized look that fits your décor. Be sure to use these sparingly, as you do not want to completely cover your decoupage images with paint. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 8

Finish with another coat of decoupage adhesive.

    Paint as a Sealant

    • 9

Apply a thin coat of decoupage adhesive to the object you wish to decorate, using a sponge brush.

    • 10

Add cut outs of pictures, photos, stickers or wallpaper you wish to have cover the object, before the adhesive dries.

    • 11

Seal your decoupage project with clear spray paint instead of applying more decoupage adhesive.
