How to Learn the Gully Creepa Dance

The Gully Creepa -- the Jamaican pronunciation for "Gully Creeper" -- is a dance popularized by dancehall music artist Elephant Man. In 2008, Elephant Man released a song by the same name, taking inspiration for its dance from guys who hang out in the gullies or back alleys of the inner city in an attempt to hide out from law enforcement. The dance is meant to capture the laid-back walk of these Caribbean "rude boys."

Instructions

    • 1

Play the song "Gully Creepa" by Elephant Man or any other dancehall tune.

    • 2

Squat down slightly and keep your back straight; you should appear to be in a semi-seated position.

    • 3

Walk slowly from this squatting position, keep your knees bent as you walk. Lift off and land using the ball of your feet while walking. Move your legs to the beat of the music.

    • 4

Roll your hips forward and backwards as you walk. The hip roll begins on the same side as the leg you use to step forward. Step forward and push your hips forward. Pull your stomach muscles in as you push your hips forwards. Push your hips back and relax your stomach muscles to finish creating the roll movement. Repeat these movements as you step forward on your opposite leg.

    • 5

Swing your arms to exaggerate the back-and-forth motion of your arms as you walk.

    • 6

Roll your shoulders as your swing your arms to create a more fluid arm movement.
