How to Dance in Mosh Pits

Dancing in a mosh pit can be dangerous or exhilarating depending on the crowd. Also known as moshing, this type of dancing involves participants bouncing off each other, sometimes rather violently. A mosh pit usually forms during a punk, metal or hardcore concert. Despite the aggression of the dancers, the intent in a mosh pit is not to hurt another dancer, and there are rules that should be followed to protect oneself and others.

Protect yourself by choosing the concert wisely. Some mosh pits can get very rowdy or dangerous, depending on the number of people involved and their intoxication level. The type of music being moshed to, and the reputation of the band and its fans can affect the level of aggression tolerated in a mosh pit. If possible, mosh at a venue that does not serve alcohol and that does not tolerate overly intoxicated concert attendants. Mosh at concerts with rock bands that declare themselves "straight edge," referring to a movement whose members abstain from drugs or alcohol.

Wait until you are comfortable with your surroundings before joining a mosh pit. It may be dangerous to start dancing in a mosh pit with an unfamiliar crowd at an unfamiliar venue. Instead, watch from the sidelines with a few friends in a concert venue you've been to a few times. Having people around you to watch out for you and knowing your way around the dance floor will help keep you safe.

Know what to expect in a mosh pit. Look for videos online on sites like YouTube featuring people dancing in mosh pits. This will give you a better idea of what to expect, because mosh pits are generally not for beginners. Observing the dancing style will help you not only stay safe, but learn how to interact with other moshers.

Wear protective shoes. Expect to have your feet stepped on at least a few times, possibly by people wearing heels or heavy boots. Objects may fall onto your feet, as well. Therefore, your footwear should be very thick and cover your entire foot -- any type of sandal or open-toed shoe could result in severe injuries. Wear shoes with a non-slip sole to avoid slipping and falling in case the dance floor gets wet. Work boots are a good option.
