How to Tie Ghillie Shoes

Ghillies are a type of soft shoe worn in Irish and Highland dance. Lacing up your ghillies can be confusing if you've never done it before. With a little practice, however, lacing up your ghillies is just as easy as tying any other type of shoe. Different dancers have varying preferences for how they like to wrap and tie the extra lace. The most common method is to wrap any extra lace around the shin and tie it in the front. This method won't damage the arch of the foot and doesn't obstuct the view of the front of the foot.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your right ghillie shoe on.

    • 2

Grab the left lace with your right hand and the right lace with your left hand to form a crisscross pattern. There should be a loop on either side of the ankle of your ghilly as well as one loop in the back.

    • 3

Pass the lace in your right hand through the loop on the right side of your ankle. Pass the lace in your left hand through the loop on the left side of your ankle. Pass both of the laces in opposite directions through the loop in the back.

    • 4

Wrap the laces around your ankle a second time and then tie a small bow at the front of the leg using a double knot.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 with your left ghillie shoe.
