Skanking is a simple dance you can do to all tempos of reggae. First, listen to the music. There are four beats in each bar so you'll do four distinct dance steps, one on each beat, and then repeat the steps. Stand with your feet hip-width apart, and bend your elbows so that your hands are up by your waist. Keep your hands in loose fists. On the first beat, bring your left elbow forward, across your body, and slightly downward. At the same time, bring your right knee up toward your left elbow. Your knee doesn't have to touch your elbow; it'll be closer or farther away depending on how vigorously you're skanking. On beat number two, bring your left elbow and right knee back to the starting position. On beat three, do the opposite of what you just did. Bring your right elbow forward, across your body, and slightly downward. At the same time, bring your left knee up toward your right elbow. On the fourth beat, bring your right elbow and left knee back to the starting position. Repeat the moves for beats 1 through 4.
Dancehall is a faster style of reggae that has its own specific dance moves with descriptive names. "Pon De River" is a popular dance, especially after Elephant Man's 2006 dancehall hit of the same name. Kick your left foot out about six inches off the floor. Next, bring your left foot back next to your right foot with a little jump. Then, kick your right foot out about six inches above the floor; as you do so, jump up a little with your left foot. As you kick your left foot out, swing your right arm up across your body with your elbow bent, as if you're jogging. As you kick your right foot out, swing your left arm in the same way. The beat is 4/4 and you'll perform one move on every beat: left kick, together, right kick, together.
To do the dancehall move "Down Di Flank," hop on your left foot while swinging your right knee left and right, without letting the right foot touching the floor. To swing your knee, build up momentum by swinging your arms: as you swing your knee in (left), swing your left arm across your body, and as you swing your knee out (right), swing your right arm across your body. Flex your right foot and push your heel in the direction your knee is swinging. Perform one movement on each beat: knee in, knee out, knee in, knee out. As you swing your knee, keep hopping on your left foot.
To perform "Give Dem A Run," you'll first step forward on your right foot, and swing your left foot out behind you as if you were running. As you do this, swing your left arm across your body, elbow bent. Next, switch to your left foot with a little jump, and swing your right foot out behind you, swinging your right arm across your body. Next, step forward onto your right foot with a small jump, but instead of putting your left leg out behind you, swing your right knee out to the side, keeping it bent, and do a little hop on your right foot. Swing your left arm across your body, and as you swing your knee out, pump that arm a tiny amount (in other words, push your fist forward a little, so your arm swings very slightly). Perform one move for every beat: run, run, run, swing. Repeat, this time starting on the left foot.
