How to Put a Dance Step Diagram on the Floor

A dance step diagram can be beneficial when learning a dance combination. Having the steps laid out visually on the floor can help you to absorb and internalize the steps better than just listening to instructions or observing. If applying to the floor, the steps should be laminated or painted securely, so they will not be scuffed or moved by dancing feet. If using an overlay on the floor, be sure it is secure, so the dancer does not trip or slip.

Instructions

  1. Applying a Step Diagram

    • 1

Choose a combination you wish to apply to the floor. This should not be overly complex as two many visuals on the floor will become confusing. A simple combination with fewer than five steps will be best. A combination that can be repetitive and fluid will work well as well.

    • 2

Cut out shoe-shaped cutouts from a poster board. Lay out the cutouts from the entire combination on the floor to represent each step the dancer takes.

    • 3

Label each foot left or right with an "L" or "R." Number each shoe in the order the foot is placed there during the combination. Use a dark, bold marker for all labeling.

    • 4

Secure with glue or by placing a clear laminate or clear tape over it, so the shoe is entirely covered.

    • 5

Use a sturdy sheet of plastic, tarp or poster board to create a less permanent and removable diagram. Either follow the same steps as above, or simply draw the shoe shapes and steps directly onto the plastic. Mount firmly on the ground on a backyard lawn by using nails, or place heavy objects firmly onto the sheet to secure if dancing indoors.
