How to Keep Your Boots From Sliding During a Dance Recital

Getting the right amount of slippage on a dance shoe is a trick that can take years to master. The need for the shoe to glide effortlessly over the dance floor during turns, and the need for control must be in constant balance to prevent a dancer from sliding out of control.

When working in footwear not designed for dancing, such as most boots, the problem can be even trickier. One of the keys, as with any performance question, is constant rehearsal in the boots. The more you practice, the more control you will be able to exhibit. Preparing the soles properly is another key that must not be overlooked.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the stage with a dust mop and static cling dust spray before every rehearsal and performance. Repeat at intermission if the building is older and prone to dusty conditions.

    • 2

Install ladies dress shoe slip resistant pads to the soles of your boots with shoe repair adhesive. Choose the triangular type pads designed for pointed toe shoes and install them with the wide edge forward, just behind the ball of the foot on the underside of the boot. This provides a controlled surface allowing some grip, while giving the dancer the ability to shift weight forward for a smooth slide when needed.

    • 3

Allow for the label recommended drying time before wearing the boots. Test the pads in rehearsal for proper placement, and to be sure the adhesive will hold. Replace pads with a lesser grip type if they bind or catch, causing trips. The goal is control, not to stop all sliding.

    • 4

Place a wooden box of dance shoe resin on the side of the stage and have all dancers step into it before taking the stage. This will give a more controlled slide. The resin will slip easily, until stopping pressure is applied, then you can stop gently.
