Watch performances of break dancing before attempting to duplicate any of the movements. You need to have an idea of what break dance is all about. Break dance started as a cultural type of dance on street corners in lower income areas. Break dancers learned from watching other break dancers. It's a mood, an attitude and a dance all together.
Learn the four basic parts of a break dance routine.
"Top Rock" is where you dance or rock out while standing up.
"Go Down" depicts the method, movement or step you use within your break dance routine to move from the "top rock" position down on to the ground. There are various names for the movements such as the funky zigzag and the corkscrew.
"Footwork" is where you see the break dancers on the ground twisting, turning and flipping. They are actually doing steps, and are choreographed moves.
"The freeze" is the part we probably most visualize about break dancing. You actually see the break dancer freeze or hold a pose as though they're suspended in mid air with one hand or foot.
Strengthen your body to prepare to study break dancing. It looks fun, but can actually be very dangerous, as many of the steps or movements involve throwing your body to the ground. So, work out and get into good condition before you start a break dancing class.
