How to Donate a Ballet Leotard

Most ballet schools have a strict dress code: leotard, tights and ballet shoes. While some schools simply require a specific color of leotard, others specify the exact color and model of leotard for each student level. Therefore, ballet students need new leotards not only when they grow, but also when they move up to a new level. This essential piece of clothing can be quite expensive, ranging from about $15 to upwards of $40 as of April 2011. Donating used leotards is a way to keep the pile of unused leotards from taking over your closet and to help other students in need.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the leotard following the instructions on the label. Most leotards can be machine-washed in cold water on the delicate cycle. Lay the leotard flat to dry.

Contact your ballet school to see if they accept leotard donations. For schools that have very specific uniform requirements, this is an excellent way to help out a student whose family struggles to provide new leotards as the student progresses.

    • 3

Contact your local ballet company to see if they run an outreach program serving low-income or at-risk youth. These programs, such as those run by the Saint Joseph Ballet and the Orlando Ballet, have become much more prevalent in areas across the country. These programs will often accept donations of leotards to help out the students they serve.
