Enroll in ballet classes at a reputable dance studio. Technique classes lasting 60 to 90 minutes should be taken two to four times weekly. These classes focus on barre work in which dancers warm up their muscles and develop core skills and strength. Once you have advanced to dancing in toe shoes, add hour-long pointe classes twice a week to your technique classes.
Listen carefully to your ballet teachers. When your teacher gives you a correction, work hard to make the necessary adjustment. Ballet teachers may only give corrections to dancers they believe have potential to improve, so value their time and attention when they offer you correction. Implementing their suggestions is the fastest way to become a better dancer.
Stretch at home on days you don't have ballet classes. Stretching improves your extension which makes your turn-out better and kicks higher. Stretch while watching television or reading. Serious ballet dancers may stretch for one to two hours a day.
Dance from your center. Good ballet dancers look weightless when they dance. Imagine a string running through the center of your body and coming out through the top of your head and someone pulling that string to lift you when you rise to demi-pointe. Be aware of your center and constantly strive to lift yourself through it when you dance.
Smile when you dance. Good dancers seem to glow with a passion for ballet. Imagine a glowing light in the middle of your chest; pull your shoulders back, use your arms to frame the glow and feel the warmth of the light on your face. Make your face shine with love for the dance, your partner and the music.
