How to Make a Ballerina Wand

Wands enhance the storytelling and mystique of a ballerina. According to "The Dancer's Book of Ballet Crafts: Dancewear, Accessories, and Keepsakes" by Christina Aleta Haskin, wands feature in many story ballets and represent the magical and imaginary worlds of the dancers. Young ballerinas, especially, may enjoy dancing with wands in their ballet class. To make your own ballerina wand, choose colors and patterns that symbolize the mood or theme of the ballet that inspires you.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint one side of a 5-inch-wide wooden craft star with a sponge brush and white, pink or another color of acrylic paint. Let the star dry.

    • 2

Turn the star over and paint the other side. Let the paint dry.

    • 3

Paint a 24-inch-long wooden dowel with a 1/4-inch diameter using the acrylic paint and sponge brush. Let the dowel dry.

    • 4

Add a second paint coat to the dowel and both sides of the star and let them fully dry. If you want to sprinkle glitter on your star, add it to the star when the paint is still wet.

    • 5

Choose which side of the star is the front side and lay the star front side up on a table.

    • 6

Arrange crystal rhinestones with flat backs in whichever pattern you would like on the surface of the star and glue the backs of them to the star using jewelry glue.

    • 7

Turn over the star once the glue has dried completely.

    • 8

Add a 3-inch strip of glue from the hot glue gun on one end of the dowel and press the dowel to the star. Let the glue dry.

    • 9

Cut a 24-inch-long strip of metallic ribbon using scissors.

    • 10

Cut a 24-inch-long strip of sheer ribbon using scissors.

    • 11

Tie the ribbons together in a bow shape to the dowel beneath the wooden star. The ribbon ends should hang down the length of the dowel.
